About the Tribe

WHY THE 7% TRIBE?
ACCORDING TO STATISTICS PUBLISHED BY THE BUSINESSWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA (BWASA), THAT IS THE PERCENTAGE OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS ON BOARDS HELD BY SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN.
SHOCKING RIGHT?

THE 7% TRIBE ASKS CEOS, POLITICIANS, TRAILBLAZERS AND OUT-THE BOX THINKERS TO PUT OUR HEADS TOGETHER, JOIN FORCES AND SHOUT LOUDLY: 7% IS NOT ENOUGH. NOT NEARLY!

The 7% Tribe is a movement that aims to shatter the glass ceiling and, in so doing, create a path for future generations to follow. South Africa has given rise to so many hugely inspirational women and, by tapping into their insights, skills and talents, we can help uplift a new generation of successful South African women.

The 7% Tribe recognises that, in communities where girls have not enjoyed access to world-class education or mentorship, women may not have the confidence and resilience needed to succeed in the competitive corporate environment. That’s why we’re aiming to provide young girls and women from disadvantaged communities with the skills and support they need to make their mark in the working world.

“We need to highlight the victories won and celebrate the amazing, strong, female leaders in every sector of our society who are changing things for the better and smashing the ‘glass ceiling’, but we need to be mindful of how much still needs to be done”.

THESE INITIATIVES CULMINATE IN OUR ANNUAL AWARD CEREMONY, WHERE WE RECOGNISE COMPANIES THAT HAVE SUCCESSFULLY NURTURED CORPORATE CULTURES THAT SUPPORT WOMEN. ULTIMATELY, THE 7% TRIBE IS A SOCIAL COMMUNITY MADE UP OF WOMEN WHO RECOGNISE THAT THEIR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR TOMORROW’S GENERATION TO FLOURISH. TODAY IT IS A DREAM. TOMORROW IT WILL BE OUR REALITY. THAT IS THE POWER OF THE TRIBE.

THE FUTURE OF THE TRIBE

THE GALA EVENING OF 31ST AUGUST, WHILE CONCEPTUALISED TO CELEBRATE AND HONOUR FEMALE TRAILBLAZERS, AS WELL AS BUSINESSWOMEN, ENTREPRENEURS, COMMUNITY LEADERS AND PHILANTHROPISTS WHO HAVE AUTHENTICALLY AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY BROKEN THROUGH GLASS CEILINGS OR BECOME A FIRST IN THEIR FIELD, HAS EVOLVED INTO SOMETHING MUCH LARGER: A MOVEMENT CALLED THE 7% TRIBE.

Several media and trailblazers have pledged their support to create an initiative that will help other young women succeed in their chosen career paths. The gala dinner to be hosted on 31 August ties in with Women’s Month, but this is only the beginning of our journey.

So often, events come and go with no measurability, creating no meaningful change. After the clinking of the glasses and the warm and fuzzy feelings, people return to their routine until the following year, when once again the focus falls on Women’s Month. The 7% Tribe insists we DO MORE.

Because 7% is not enough.

With this in mind, we will announce our future initiatives and planned events for the next 12 months on 31 August, as we expand the 7% Tribe on a national scale.
